She's a vlogger now!!!!! :)

Museum of the impossible

Yesterday we went to NYU where we viewed an exhibit called "Glimpses" where the students of the school created art that showcased how they viewed the their communities to look like in 30 years form now. The artwork was incredibly interesting, and unique I would have to say but in sum I viewed it as impossible. In one of the exhibits there was a red carpet that led into the city and what was called a "thinking tank". There was another one with a car driving on water -_- come on I know the students were only trying to be creative but they can also be realistic. The exhibit was nice and interesting overall I have to say though.

Super lag in SL

Yesterday we were practicing our talk shows in second life. We were given a maximum of twenty minutes to practice our scripts and possibly come up with an ad-lib for second life. Then while the executive director Evvy and a woman named Allison that came from the Hearst foundation to see if she would consider donating to the global kids program were watching us, we put on our talk shows in second life. This experience was sort of difficult because the internet connection was slow and the feedback I was getting from my partner was static and words. I had fun coming up with things to talk about with my "guest". My only issue was the lag and static but other than that I think I'm pretty set to be host of my new show "Is it too late?" Yay me!!!!!!:)

Sippin' that good ole haterade :P

I like how me and my group worked so hard today, putting together an awesome script. Working toward having something presentable when it came to having our talk show. We were working in sync, giving each other feedback on our work and telling each other what was next to do. We had somewhat of a system and got most of the work done. I'm in my own world putting together the script as I thought other groups were dong as well. When it came to presenting everyone's work it was pretty visible in the work that was produced, that the other groups were having a hard time working together. Then when our work came on the screen as excited I was for them to view the hard work that was put into the script and all other aspects, I heard some really rude comments coming from what is called sore losers. Saying too much work was put into it and that we were trying to hard..... I'm sorry (not really) but this was how we defined the project. Guess some people were really sipping on that Good Ole HATERADE!!! :) :P

Transit museum NYC

We all have taken the MTA transit trains once in a while or it may even be a part of your daily life. Ever wondered how the train was created or how it works? Well I was given the chance at work to attend the NYC transit museum. I found it pretty cool and amazing how certain things operated and how it has changed over time. I was able to sit in one of the first trains invented and realize the faults of their structures. I learned that when the MTA is done with their trains their usable pars become recycled, the train itself gets sold to collectors and the shells of the train become homes for sea life. Also I was shocked to hear the foolery of how the MTA fooled it's customers with the secret "Money train". One more thing that surprised me was that there were three different railroad companies one that ran the number trains and two that ran the letter trains. This was by far one of favorite GK experiences!!!

Project "Fun Disaster" :)

Today we were working on our projects again. If most of you don't know yet, my project is about global warming. At first i didn't want to use a google doc to do my project, but then I started using it and found it to be more enjoyable than writing. I am a slow type writer so I usually like to write but I actually preferred to type. I kinda didn't even want to go to lunch because of the project which is kinda sad. We were engaging ourselves in typing random bits of our project that needed to be done. The fact that there was a whole bunch of writing in my doc just made me more excited to get more done. I kept changing the color of the font and commenting on my fellow project members' work. This project is actually becoming more enjoyable as time goes on, i mean I'm having fun!!!!!!

Interchangable interviewers

Today there were three interchangeable positions appointed to each group. These positions were interviewer, interviewee and camera person. We were each to take on each of the following roles as we videotaped each others interviews. This was really fun. I stepped out of my normal elf and even put on a British accent to give some depth to my interviewing experience. This exersize was actually put into place for us so that we can shuffle out who the host will be of each of my shows. All I know is I have much confidence for my part. :D

Interviewing Strangers O.o

Today we were split into our groups once again and asked to interview complete strangers at the sight we are currently located at, Parsons University. This task was not too difficult I have to say. Although me and my group member had our fellow group member ask everyone if they didn't mind being interviewed. Not that I was scared to ask (I am a very bold individual) but because I have little patience at times and would be extremely upset if I was continuosly rejected. In this case I was the interviewer and had to come up with on the spot questions and keep an ongoing conversation as if I were doing an actual interview. For the most part it went well, had nice close conversations with my clients and actually enjoyed myself. Things should go even better on Second life. And also there is a whole load more I could say but would rather not because it would take too long to write....:)

Apearences even matter in a virtual game

Today in Second life I had finally found my objects that included a whole set of new clothes. I had thought I lost these clothes. I became infatuated with viewing all of my new clothes and items. I found some motorcycles which my coworkers were for some reason in belief that I would actually give them. LOL I changed into a beautiful gown and now believe myself to be obsessed with looking at my new things and trying them on. I REALLY want to go on secong life right now so I think I will for a few minutes.

Forte Greene cleanup

For work, we were asked to do a cleanup of Forte Greene Park in Brooklyn. I know, its summertime and we're in a park raking leaves?! O.o There are trees planted all around New York that have a defense mechanism so instead of shedding leaves once a year, they shed twice a year, in the fall and summer. We were raking the leaves because people like to have their own cookouts and BBQ's but leave their hot colas on the ground and if there are a lot of leaves on the ground, a fire could commence. This experience was very insightful. I got to see what it is like to rake leaves in a park, something I have never done. Although I have done a lot of community service as is.

Forte Greene Park monument
This is the giant tower in the park that I could not find because of the trees. The one that one of the GK interns was told she was too short to see, although this is probably the same case for me as well.

SL scavenger hunt

Today we were on a scavenger hunt in second life. The items that were hidden in the game were placed in what was believed to be the more obvious places but for some reason it was physically impossible for me to find them. I had only found about three items and looking for these items was as frustrating as ever. I hate to sound like a sore loser but as the game progressed and I found myself not winning, I became a bit uninterested in winning. But I still put in an effort and tried playing to my optimal potential. YAY ME!!!!

Group work

I don't really understand why I became so frustrated and agrivated with my group today when we were  working. I am the type of person who is extremely enthusiastic and enjoys to have others who are enthusiastic as well working with me. But ever since we started working together on our project, it seemed as if no one wanted to get work done. As if they felt the task that was given to us was too difficult for them to handle. I got upset because in school, I am usually the one person of the group who ends up doing all the work and I didn't want to be that again at work. We were given two simple tasks and I felt as if I was the only one actually trying to make progress with my work. I feel bad for easily getting frustrated but then again I could not help it. Hopefully there is  more enthusiasm next time we get to work on Monday.

Elevator pitch

So we were paired up at work and given the task of creating an elevator pitch where we had to discuss the differences between climate justice, climate change and global warming. This was a difficult task at first because my brain was slightly lagging at that moment. I actually told my partner that we should improvise instead of plan it out. We ended up planning it out and it actually quite easy. When me and my partner finished our performance, we were actually the best. Gave my partner a big high five as I sat there feeling pretty proud of myself. Not only can I distinguish between the climate change, climate justice and global warming but we were also good at giving an awesome elevator pitch!!! :)

Public Access Television

Today I was given the privilage of going to the public access television station of the borough of Manhattan. We were given a tour of the station and were actually given a chance to put on our own talk shows as we were video taped by students learning to use their equipment. This was an interesting experience because I got the chance to step out of who I was and put myself into a world where I was a talk show host, putting on a show for all to see. I find it to be giving to the community the fact that just any person can come off the street and step into their office, ay that they want to make their own show and actually be given the resources to make their production happen. Something I never knew was reality but also something I learned today. Go society for making this possible.

SL and the Cornwal House

In the Second life game, me and my fellow peers followed Chickie Boom into the Cornwall House and learned a few things about energy. In the Cornwall house I learned a few things about how a house can maintain sustainability. I learned that you can recycle glass bottles and use them as a glass wall. This will allow sunlight to pass into the house to limit the use of light bulbs during the day. I also learned that tile flooring can be used as well for maintaining sustainability. The tiles can store heat and stay cool as well so it is sustainable. One more thing I learned was that grey water is the water that is produced when we do everyday things such as take a shower, wash dishes, etc. Black water is the water tat is mixed with your human waste or excrement and fresh water is exactly what it says, fresh water. SL rocks!!!!!:)

Displacement and us

A woman came from an agency and spoke to us about ow climate change was affecting a certain part of the world, a small set of islands called Papua New Guinea. There an island that was composed of about two thousand residents and due to the climate change, the water surrounding their island was rising and flooding their home. They are now, due to the rising levels being forced to move to an island located close to their island. In doing this, tensions can be fired up due to the fact that although the people on the two islands are of the same culture, the displaced island members are going onto their territory and invading their space. When you think of it this is only the beginning of the effect of climate change n the world. We may think we are safe for now and that everything is going well for us, but we re next up for being displaced. Its not too late to change our ways and turn this climate change around. Save the world!! Before the next island or landmass being replaced is yours.

To eat healthy or to not eat healthy

Today in LTS, we watched a couple videos oh how companies and corporations create the food we eat. The inhumane practices that are being used when handling the animals and plants that we would soon consume. Pesticides are being sprayed on the fruits and vegetables tat we eat. Animals are suffering abuse, being mistreated by machines and even people. One part of the video that really upset me was when I found out that baby cows were being fed the blood of their dead kin. I am an animal lover and to hear about the malpractices being used in the food industry, I was simply heart broken. It made me really think....... I am one person, a piece of the puzzle to solving this and bringing justice to the food industry. The decisions I make can indeed influence others and begin a chain reaction that will work toward solving this injustice. Doing the simplest things such as growing my own food or going to support local farmers markets be some of the first steps toward ridding of these big corporations and finally having all of our food grown the way it should be.

Climate change vs. The world

We all know that our planet Earth is enduring a horror called global warming. The way we are treating our earth, polluting the atmosphere, degrading the land and so on is causing the ozone layer to thicken. Since this is happening, more of the suns ultraviolet rays are remaining on Earth, warming it to the point that disasters are continuously occurring on our precious planet. Tsunamis, hurricanes and earthquakes such as the big one that occurred in Japan are happening because of the climate change. If the people on our planet do not change their ways so that we can prevent if not reverse this process, there will be no Earth including certain species and life for us to call our own. SAVE THE EARTH!!!! Recycle, switch to fluorescent bulbs, take public transportation or even walk to save the atmosphere. This is not only our planets fight it is Climate change vs. The world (US!!)

Second life, First experience

Today I played a game I had never played before. =-/ It was called Second life. This was a game where I was able to step into a virtual reality and chat with and befriend an excessive amount of people from all around the world. I started using this game because of my summer job at Global Kids. We are going to be talking about sustainability and started using second life as a means of learning more about this game. Once I got a gist of what to do I began to roam this virtual world and converse as well as befriend fellow Second life players even a boy from Costa Rica which I found to be pretty cool. I became immersed in the game and found it to be quite enjoyable. Then I was told to sign out and quit the game which kinda made me sad :(.  I can not wait to go home and sign on to Second life for round two of this experience. =D
